“Two bodies, as if naked, advance on stage, clinging to each other and never letting go. A man and a woman whose bodies attract and cling to each other, joined together until they become inseparable. She is a liana that wraps itself around him, twisting and turning. He holds her, restrains her, supports her. There is something mythical about their dance, in this total fusion of two beings who become one, never to be separated again. Eden is original love, that of the times of innocence. There is also something raw and primitive about this duo. The image of the sounds of waterfalls and storms that make up the sound of the dance. Eden is a dance full of strength and beauty, perhaps because of the naturalness that emanates from the purity and precision of the movement, the almost plastic figures, the power of the bodies. Over the course of more than Duo d’Eden two dancers from the MMCDC perform with style and mastery a piece of rare beauty, original, very difficult and complex, created in 1986 by Maguy Marin for her company. Simply a man and a woman, flesh-coloured leotards highlighting their nakedness, a long-haired wig for her, clinging to each other for the entire duration of the piece, with her constantly moving over his body. An Adam and Eve immersed in a journey of sensuality, eros, defence and attack, in a world that is not so peaceful, safe and idyllic. A poetic and intense piece.

GROSSE FUGUE

Four women and an extraordinary piece of music such as Die Grosse FugeMaguy Marin's personal interpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven's work, considered a milestone in the relationship between classical music and contemporary dance, is based on a constant, intimate dialogue between dance and music, on a deep connection between the two arts. Created in 2001 for C.ie Maguy Marin, it is now being revived in an interpretation by four dancers from the MM Contemporary Dance Company. The encounter between the four women and the music gives rise to a complexity between the growing vital force of the female being and the state of enthusiasm and despair of this score. The dance becomes a euphoric explosion of energy, where the four performers, dressed in red, in an almost frenetic alternation, jump, run, collapse and rise again in a vital and frenetic whirlwind. A metaphor for life that becomes a vortex and an exciting race against death, where the vertigo of the end itself leads us to always want to run breathlessly, to live every moment as if it were the last. An overwhelming and moving work, a moment of pure emotion.

Maguy Marin joined Mudra, the school and choreographic residence created by Maurice Bejart in Brussels, in 1972. From 1974 to 1977, she was a full member of Les ballet du XXe siècle, directed by Bejart. In 1984, she founded the Compagnie Maguy Marin: after residing at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Créteil, the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape (Lyon) and later in Toulouse, in 2015 she settled with the company in Ramdam, in the Lyon region, a place dedicated to artistic creation, to develop an ambitious project: Ramdam, an art centre. Maguy Marin is the leading representative of “new French dance” and has created many famous shows, such as Babel Babel (1976), Cendrillon (1985), Coups d’état (1988), Made in France (1992), Aujourd’hui peut-être (1996), Quoi qu’il en soit (1999), Pièces détachées (2002), Umwelt (2004), Turba (2007), Salves (2010). But it is May B, a show inspired by the literary universe of Samuel Beckett and created in 1981, that is still considered a true masterpiece today, continuing to be performed in France and around the world. While choreographing all of her company's shows, she has also created works for major companies such as the Dutch National Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater 3, Paris Opera and Lyon Opera. In addition to the honours she has received in her homeland – in 1998 she was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres – she is one of the few non-Americans to have received the American Dance Festival Award in 2003 and the Bessie Award in New York in 2008 for Unwelt. In 2016, she received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Dance Biennale. Overall, Maguy Marin's creative output could be summarised under the title “the human condition”: from May B to her most recent works, she has created characters that highlight the grotesque soul of humankind, intrinsically linked to its essence. The result is powerful, ironic, but also fierce.

La MM Contemporary Dance Company è una compagnia di danza contemporanea diretta dal coreografo Michele Merola, nata nel 1999 come centro di produzione di eventi e spettacoli e come promotrice di rassegne e workshop con l’obiettivo di favorire scambi e alleanze fra artisti italiani e internazionali, testimoni e portavoce della cultura contemporanea. Il repertorio della compagnia, che ha sede a Reggio Emilia, è ricco e variegato, grazie ai lavori di Michele Merola e alle creazioni firmate da coreografi europei e italiani come Maguy Marin, Mats Ek, Mauro Bigonzetti, Thomas Noone, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, Karl Alfred Schreiner, Silvia Gribaudi, Eugenio Scigliano, Emanuele Soavi, Enrico Morelli, Daniele Ninarello, Ginevra Panzetti ed Enrico Ticconi, Roberto Tedesco, Camilla Monga, Adriano Bolognino. Nel 2010 la MM Contemporary Dance Company ha vinto il prestigioso Premio Danza&Danza come migliore compagnia emergente e oggi, è, a tutti gli effetti, una realtà di eccellenza della danza italiana, con una consolidata attività di spettacoli su tutto il territorio nazionale. Da alcuni anni ha conquistato un mercato internazionale con spettacoli in paesi europei ed extraeuropei (Corea, Colombia, Canada, Germania, Russia, Marocco, Belgio, Spagna, Slovenia, Ungheria, Repubblica Ceca, Svezia, Francia, Finlandia, Serbia, Norvegia, Croazia). Nel 2017 la MM Contemporary Dance Company ha vinto il Premio Europaindanza 2017 – Premio al Merito alla coreografia, per lo spettacolo Bolero di Michele Merola. Nel 2022 la MMCDC ha vinto il premio Danza&Danza per la migliore produzione italiana con lo spettacolo Ballade (cor. Mauro Bigonzetti, Enrico Morelli) e nel 2024 ha vinto il premio Danza&Danza per la Valorizzazione del repertorio, per lo spettacolo Grosse Fugue di Maguy Marin. Nel 2021, 2022 e 2024 è stata presente su RAI 1 nelle trasmissioni di Roberto Bolle “Danza con me” e “Viva la danza” interpretando coreografie di Mauro Bigonzetti e Lorca Massine. Per il triennio 2018-20, nel 2021 e per il triennio 2022-24 la MM Contemporary Dance Company è stata compagnia associata del Circuito InDanza del Trentino Alto Adige. La MMCDC è sostenuta dal Ministero della Cultura, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Comune di Reggio Emilia, Centro Permanente Danza Danza/Reggio Emilia.
