The term unisono [from the latin uni- and sonus «sound»] is used in music to indicate the effect of two or more sounds of the same pitch, even if they have different timbres, which play the same melody simultaneously. In common speech it is a term used as a synonym of agreement, in complete harmony: working in unison. This soundtrack fills and guides our action this year. Raising a simultaneous chorus that breaks solipsism to throw light into a common path that finds its own melody in the sensuality of bodies. Harmonizing different voices to challenge gravity: that of facts, assimitry, pressures and narration which hurl us into fixed shields of resistence. We dance the song to construct and imagine a plural space, to feel, even before understanding, to enjoy even before interpreting. This is why to the term Unison we add “with several voices”not necessarily to underline a collectivity implicit in the term, but more to highlight a plurality that goes much further than the sum of its parts and finds in the radicalism of the individual the force of the total. Not therefore sounds of the same pitch to form a melody but a tapestry of different timbres to form a common journey even at the cost of betraying harmony.
In fact the voice, before joining the realm of the semantic or being orchestrated as an acoustic phenomenon, is a physical event, intrinsically tied to the subject who emits it, to the emission of breath. It is an instrument of intonating balance, of posture, of a body’s culture, a somatic act that is generated by a physiological entity, mnemonic, of intentions, of accents, the outcome and mimecry of a specific subjectivity. Metaphorically “to give voice to” is translated with taking a stance, boycotting the hushing up, positioning oneself. Using it collectively means to us to make vibrate the ecosystem that hosts us and of which we are cells.
How do we create a unison?
How do we give voice to the freedom of the body?
How do we create a collective movement without imposing hierarchical structures
but with choreographic
actions where the person feels free?
These questions which we ask ourselves together with Silvia Gribaudi, the artist we have asked this year to commission a site specific project with in mind the Fuori Programma and the Parco Tor Tre Teste. The program will try to answer these questions bringing together their complex and multiple nature without losing sight of the singularity and detail.
Toiù voci- more voices those of the artists who appear in our scenes, like the expressive languages that dart out of them. Fuori Programma unfolds a map of heterogenous artistic formats that find a binding note in the
mixture of different expressions. They are national and international, recent and longstanding. They are
voices that return, like that of Jacopo Godani che inaugura il who opens the festival with Symptoms of Development, his latest production for the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company. Geography that designs a mobile map of contemporary dance, a category more and more undefined by the creative charge of the movement.
Piu voci, more voices of the places visited by the Festival and expressively redesigned by the artistic practices: Parco Tor Tre Teste, Teatro India, Theatre- library of Quarticciolo and the historic centre.. Una A geography of different sounds and communities, to wander across with sudden changes of perspective. The peculiarity of Fuori Programma is that of inspiring the creation and spreading of outdoor projects, capable of reliving fully the chosen environments, involving various urban contexts of Rome to allow one to discover lesser known
areas of the city in a dynamic process of mobility between one place and another and taking part in actions to
be appreciated from different points of view. “Dance is literally a point of view of the world that imprints and affirms the individual in the space of the community while simultaneously suggesting a way of escape” Michele Di Stefano,a guest of Veduta>Roma , has written..
Piu voci, more voices are the very actions of the festival. Besides the programs of performances, our offer interweaves: artistic residences in support of emerging careers, through hosting creative processes, Panel meetings study meetings and journalistic writing sessions; workshops where one can experiment movement practice, decolonise the imagination regarding dance techniques, or experience the vibrating elements of vocalising.
Piu voci, more voices are ultimately the alliances which every year join our song to make sustainable, collaborative and similar to an ecosystem the projects and the care of the precarious world of live art, through reciprocal promotion, programming together, exchange of good practices, mutual support, in order to break down the competitive logic and the exclusiveness of guest artists.
All these voices, together, are sounds that dance the space of the present, ploughing through the compression of power, leaping through slow worldliness, finding a way around stereotypes, cutting through the air of the impossible to generate possible meetings of collective poetry.
No leader exists on this planet
There are rules I have had to learn
By myself
I have adjusted
I have measured the distances
Now I am getting rid of the borders
