In Totentanz we begin by engaging the audience in a kind of séance, with bodies that seem to speak to us from the last threshold of the world, and from there begins a journey that conflates the eternal dilemma that separates life from death. Coming to terms with death is a labyrinthine and dark path. Our imagination, always clumsy and endless, always tries to get ahead in the race for the meaning of life. And it loses its way. For life is impatient, but death knows how to wait. (Marcos Morau- La Veronal)
(Marcos Morau- La Veronal)
Totentanz, also known as Danse macabre or Dance of Death, was already in the Middle Ages a way to exorcise the fear of death in a carnival of desperate vitality. Marcos Morau, one of the most visionary artists on the contemporary scene, and his dance company La Veronal, among the most acclaimed on the international scene, revisit this ritual through a performance that gives us back a poetically pertinent image of death and the justice it entails: The fatal hour comes, infallibly, for each of us. Revisiting the dance of death in the 21st century, in the turbulence of a world thrown into terminal chaos by a thousand social, digital and spiritual revolutions, is a deliberate anachronism, almost a meditation. Morau's Totentanz is an invitation to celebrate the fragility of life and meditate on its loss of value. The current disregard for the values of life is directly proportional to the generalized inability to interpret, dance to, officiate at death as mystery. Losing consciousness, shaking the body, losing oneself in the darkness of the senses and succumbing to the trance of music and dance brings us to catharsis, and from that state even the bitter bite of nothingness enters more easily. More than five centuries later, the dance of death returns to make us wonder where we are going, who we are, and what this place we inhabit means before death takes us by the hand to dance with it.

Marcos Morau – La Veronal
Trained between Valencia, Barcelona and New York in photography, movement and theatre, Marcos Morau (Valencia, 1982) builds imaginary worlds and landscapes with a lucid look towards contemporaneity. Named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2023 by the French Ministry of Culture and selected as best choreographer of the year 2023 by the prestigious German magazine Tanz, Marcos Morau continues to grow artistically with an extraordinary career as a choreographer and stage director. Since 2004 he has directed La Veronal, which has become one of the most prominent dance companies on the European scene, and in 2013 received the National Dance Prize awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. La Veronal, praised by international critics and winner of numerous awards, has shown its shows in the best theatres and festivals in more than thirty countries: the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Biennale di Venezia, the Festival d'Avignon, Tanz Im August in Berlin, Festival RomaEuropa, SIDance Festival in Seoul, Sadler's Wells in London or Danse Danse Montreal, among many others. In addition to his continuous work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau is a guest artist in several companies and theatres around the world where he develops new creations, always halfway between performing arts and dance: Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Royal Danish Ballet or the Royal Ballet of Flanders, among many others. Since 2023, he has been an associate artist at the Staatsballet Berlin, a company linked to the Deutsche Oper, the Komische Oper and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The future of Morau and La Veronal pursues the search for new formats and languages where opera, dance and physical theatre dialogue closer than ever, seeking new ways of expressing and communicating in our present time, always turbulent and changing.MORE PERFORMANCES
