Silence and chaos, movement and stillness, East and West, nature and culture: dualities that permeate this creation and echo a beloved saying in the East: "Two is one and one is two."

The brothers in the title of Roberto Zappalà's new creation are Fuji and Etna, the two volcanoes par excellence in the history and symbolic imagery of the world. The work focuses strongly and vigorously on the relationship between the performance of the company's dancers and that of the Munedaiko, musicians dedicated to the practice and valorization of the traditional Japanese drum "Taiko" (太 tai 鼓 ko: large drum) where posture, movement and concentration are fundamental. Just as volcanoes are at the origin of the current conformation of the planet, percussion is at the origin of the musical and cultural art created by man, starting from the rhythm of the heartbeat. The drums cause bubbles of sounds, of rhythms that "explode" in the ears and brains of the spectators; rhythms that the dancers follow and provoke at the same time in an incessant flow. A common breath that harmonizes the bodies, with the civilizations of origin and with the civilizations among themselves, with the hope today increasingly desirable that, as Fosco Maraini says, we can be "soaked in that Confucian oil necessary to lubricate the wheels of civil coexistence".
Between each beat and each movement there is a natural pause, similar to the quiet that follows a volcanic eruption: a moment of silence in the rhythm of existence. This balance between movement and stillness, between sound and silence, reflects the harmony present in nature. Although the human body and spirit are often guided by energy and dynamism, there is a deep connection with the rhythms of peace that nature offers: a rhythm that, like the silence between the beats of the Taiko drum, invites reflection, renewal and a return to inner calm.

Roberto Zappalà

has been running and telling the story of a lively and vibrant South for 35 years together with his company. In 1990 he founded the Compagnia Zappalà Danza, for which he created over 85 creations. Among these, A. semu tutti devoti tutti? (2009, revived in 2019) and La Nona – dal caos, il corpo (2015) received the Danza&Danza Award as Italian Production of the Year. His creative path is characterized by complex projects, such as re-mapping-sicily, for an original reinterpretation of Sicily through his personal language, and Transiti Humanitatis, with which he continues to tell humanity through the body and gesture, exploring its history, transformation and permanence over time. Characteristic of his creations is a rigorous work on the language that has been built over time together with his dancers, called MoDem. The choreographer has also collaborated with other companies, including the Balletto di Toscana, the Ballet School of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Norrdans (Sweden), ArtEZ Arnhem (Netherlands), the Theaterwerkplaats Generale Oost Foundation (Netherlands), the Göteborg Ballet (Sweden) and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. In 2011 he curated the choreography for the opening ceremony of the World Fencing Championships and in 2016 he created the project Insieme – Parata Urbana for the Défilé of the Lyon Biennale. With Christian Graupner (Humatic, Berlin) he created the interactive installation MindBox, which won second prize at the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition in Atlanta (USA, 2011). Malcor D’ published the book Omnia Corpora, dedicated to the methodology of his work. Roberto Zappalà is the creator and responsible for the recovery of Scenario Pubblico in Catania, opened in 2002 as the first example in Italy of a European choreographic center. In 2015, Scenario Pubblico | Compagnia Zappalà Danza was recognized by MiC as one of the first National Dance Production Centers, obtaining the upgrade to Center of Relevant National Interest for Dance in 2022. Among the numerous awards received by the choreographer from Catania, in 2013 he was awarded the National Association of Theatre Critics Prize and in 2022 the Hystrio ‘Corpo a Corpo’ Prize. A. semu tutti devoti tutti?
